David Foley’s winning goal off a direct kick led the Puerto Rico Islanders to a 3-1 victory over the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Rochester’s Aaron Pitchkolan drew a red card in the 51st minute when he and a Puerto Rico player got tangled up, and the Islanders were awarded a direct kick. Foley converted to break a tie.
«We talked about staying away from that in Puerto Rico; you’re not going to get linesmen who are going to give you the benefit of the doubt,» Rhinos coach Bob Lilley said. «We were the better team and then they get the goal, and at that point even with 10 men we had our chances to tie the game.»
Kendall Jagdeosingh iced the victory for the Islanders with a goal in the 87th minute.
Conditions were sloppy, with pockets of standing water dotting the field. «I think we played well … and if we stay away from the red card, I think it’s a game we win,» Lilley said.
Puerto Rico took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on Nicholas Addlery’s bicycle-kick goal. Isaac Kissi tied it in the 45th off Rich Costanzo’s corner kick.
