River Plate Puerto Rico booked its place in the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Soccer League’s SuperCopa DirecTV with a 1-0 victory against Mayaguez, its fourth victory in as many games in the tournament.
While dominating play, River Plate got the only goal of the game in the 36th minute, Lucas Andrich finding the back of the net. A tight, defensive formation from Mayaguez gave River few other opportunities, Yaikel Perez threatening with a pair of shots.
Mayaguez, though, offered little of their own offensively, leaving River six points clear at the top of the Group A. Needing just one point from their final two games to secure first place in the group, River is now well positioned to reach the final and in turn qualify for next spring’s Caribbean Football Union Club Championships.
River could meet Sevilla FC Puerto Rico in the semifinals after Sevilla was handed its first defeat of the tournament, 2-1, by the Puerto Rico Islanders on Tuesday night. Sevilla remains in second place in Group B, three points behind the Islanders.
The Islanders took an early lead against Sevilla in their second meeting of the tournament, Noah Delgado scoring in the first minute. Sevilla hit back quickly, Chris Megaloudis scoring in the 12th minute to equalize, but the Islanders took victory and top spot in the group thanks to Jonathan Fana’s goal with 14 minutes to play.
Sevilla could seal its place in the semifinals with a victory in its next contest against Huracan, which defeated Puerto Rico United 4-1 for its first win of the tournament.
