BALTIMORE, MD — A brace from Joshua Hansen helped propel the Puerto Rico Islanders to their second win of the regular season as they made their first foray away from the island in 2010. Nicholas Addlery opened the scoring and Hansen struck twice as the Islanders rolled to a 3-1 win against Baltimore.
Sandy Gbandi, who scored in Puerto Rico’s season opening win, set up the opening strike with a free kick in the 26th minute that found the head of Addlery, who put it past goalkeeper Chase Harrison.
A pair of Randi Patterson chances went for naught as Baltimore tried to level the game over the next 12 minutes.
In the 42nd minute, Hansen beat defender Takuro Nishimura and buried the ball in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead at halftime for the visitors.
A long free kick from 40 yards in the 50th minute challenged goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, who leapt backwards to snare the ball as it flew over his head, falling back to the goalline and keeping the ball narrowly over the line as he hit the ground.
Hansen nearly added a second in the 63rd minute only to be denied by Harrison. A foul in the 75th minute, however, provided him the opportunity to push the lead to 3-0 from the penalty spot. He put it past Harrison in the 77th to give Puerto Rico a three-goal lead for the second consecutive game.
A Yaikel Perez chance came close to spoiling the shutout before a handball proved the undoing of the clean sheet for Gaudette as Matthew Mbuta put away the penalty in the 89th minute.
