SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Jonathan Fana Frias scored twice in the first half as the Puerto Rico Islanders romped to a 4-1 victory against El Salvador’s C.D. FAS in Group D of the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night at the Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel.
The victory puts the Islanders on top of their group with four points from their opening two games. Mexico’s Toluca and Honduras’ Olimpia play on Thursday night, both with one point after their opening games.
Puerto Rico took the lead in the 16th minute as David Foley slipped through the FAS defense to run onto a through ball, and he finished clinically. Fana Frias then scored his first six minutes later, a flick from Nicholas Addlery inside the penalty area finding the attacking midfielder for an angled shot into the net.
FAS pulled a goal back two minutes later, Williams Reyes finishing a near-post cross from the right by Alejandro Bentos, but Fana Frias restored the Islanders advantage in the first minute of first half stoppage time, taking advantage of some poor FAS defending as goalkeeper Bill Gaudette’s kick downfield wasn’t properly dealt with.
The game continued to be an open one for most of the second half, but another goal didn’t come until Addlery scored his fourth of the competition in the 84th minute. That put the game away for the Islanders, who will travel to face Toluca on September 15 for their third game of the group stage.
