Puerto Rico opens CFU Final Round with another shutout

TUNAPUNA, TRINIDAD — The Puerto Rico Islanders began their participation in the Final Round of the 2010 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship with a 3-0 victory over Bayamon FC at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago Wednesday evening. Noah Delgado, Nicholas Addlery and Joshua Hansen scored for the Islanders.

Delgado’s first goal of the year opened the scoringThe match in Tunapuna, Trinidad marked the start of the Final Round group phase with the two Trinidadian clubs, Joe Public and San Juan Jabloteh, meeting in the second half of the doubleheader. The four clubs are competing for the CFU Club Championship with the top three clubs also advancing to the CONCACAF Champions League.

This is the third victory in three games for the Puerto Rico Islanders in this year’s CFU Club Championship. In that span, the Islanders have scored eight goals without conceding any.

The first goal of the night for the Islanders came in the seventh minute when Noah Delgado scored on a set play after a foul outside the penalty area of Bayamon FC. It was Delgado’s first goal in 2010 for the Islanders.

In the 32nd minute Jamaican international Nicholas Addlery made it 2-0 for the Islanders. The first half ended with the score 2-0 in favor of the Puerto Rico Islanders.

Joshua Hansen scored the third and final goal of the match in the 51st minute thanks to a great assist from Addlery.

The next game of the Puerto Rico Islanders in the 2010 CFU Club Championship will be on Friday, May 7 versus Joe Public at Marvin Lee Stadium at 6:00pm in Trinidad & Tobago. Joe Public won the showdown between the two Trinidadian sides, posting a 1-0 decision on a 50th minute strike from defender Radanfah Abu Bakr.
