CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer said Monday that due to the destruction caused by the storm which came ashore early Saturday and the recovery efforts in Houston, the match will be scheduled for a later date.
“In light of extensive damage and the citywide curfew in Houston due to Hurricane Ike, CONCACAF has postponed the match,” Blazer said. “This match will be re-scheduled for a future date. Details will be released once they are finalized. CONCACAF extends its best wishes to the residents of Houston and all those impacted by the storm.”
The match is the second to be affected by a hurricane this season. The first leg of the Preliminary Round match between Harbour View of Jamaica and Pumas UNAM in Kingston on 28 August had to be cancelled due to Hurricane Gustav. The series was played as a one-match playoff in Mexico City, which Pumas won 3:0 a week later.
The CONCACAF Champions League™ Group Stage begins Tuesday with three games, the Puerto Rico Islanders vs. Tauro FC of Panama, D.C. United vs. Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica and San Francisco FC of Panama vs. Pumas.
