Tampa native brings toughness to the middle of the field
After announcing the club’s first four signings on Friday, the Atlanta Silverbacks have added a fifth, agreeing to a contract with midfielder FERNANDO GONZALEZ, pending approval from the United States Soccer Federation.
Gonzalez, 21, comes to Atlanta following a successful collegiate career playing for the University of South Florida. The Tampa native made 78 appearances during his four-year career with the Bulls, playing mostly in a central defensive midfield role.
In addition to his achievements in the Big East Conference, Gonzalez has also proven successful in international play. The 5-foot-10 midfielder was named to the Puerto Rico U21 Men’s National Team Pool in 2010, gaining valuable training experience leading up to the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Gonzalez is known for being a physical player who is to ugh on the ball in the middle of the field. He is expected to play a more defensive role in the midfield for the Silverbacks.
«Fernando’s a great addition to our roster,» said Director of Soccer Rodrigo Rios. «He’s a young, hard-working player who brings both collegiate and international experience to the team.»
